Types based on symptoms

It can also be classified into two categories based on the symptoms the individual is experiencing: somatic and cognitive.

Somatic Anxiety

This condition is characterized by physical symptoms, such as sweating, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and shortness of breath. Affected individuals may experience these symptoms without an obvious trigger or in response to a stressful situation. This type can be a symptom any of the previous disorders; panic disorder, social disorder, and generalized disorder.

Cognitive Anxiety

The cognitive type is characterized by excessive worry and negative thoughts. the person may experience a constant sense of fear about future events or outcomes and difficulty concentrating or making decisions. It can be a symptom of any of the disorders mentioned above.

Let’s say someone has a social type disorder with a fear of public speaking. This fear could manifest in different ways depending on whether the individual experiences somatic or cognitive type.

If he experiences somatic anxiety, he may feel physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, and a rapid heartbeat before and during a public speaking event. Also, he may have difficulty breathing and feel a sense of nausea or stomach discomfort. These are somatic symptoms that can distress the person and make it difficult for him to focus on their speech or perform well in front ofpeople.

On the other hand, if he experiences cognitive anxiety, he may have negative thoughts and worry excessively about the upcoming speaking event and may imagine worst-case scenarios, such as forgetting their speech or being ridiculed by the audience.

Symptoms of Anxiety

The symptoms vary widely depending on the type of the disorder, but there are some common symptoms including:

  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Muscle tension
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Panic attacks

Causes

2- Trauma or stressful life events
3- Chronic medical conditions
4- Substance abuse (drugs) or withdrawal
5- Brain chemistry imbalances
6- Personality factors such as perfectionism or low self-esteem

How to Manage

It is not easy to manage these disorders, but there are several strategies that can help including:

1- Psychotherapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other forms of talk therapy can help people with theses disorders identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors.
2- Medication: Antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications can be helpful for managing the symptoms, but they should always be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
3- Lifestyle changes: Regular exercise, healthy eating, and good sleep habits can all help.
4- Stress-management techniques: Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can help reduce the symptoms.
5- Support groups: Connecting with others who are going through similar experiences can be helpful for managing anxiety and feeling less alone.
