Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that are spread, mainly, through sexual contact.
There are several types of Sexually Transmitted Diseases – STDs including:
- Bacterial STDs: Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are all bacterial STIs.
- Viral STDs: Herpes, HPV, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C are all viral STIs.
- Parasitic STDs: Trichomoniasis is a parasitic STD.
- Fungal STDs: Candidiasis (yeast infection) is a fungal STD.
- Protozoal STDs: Amoebiasis and giardiasis are protozoan STDs.
Bacterial STIs can be easily treated with antibiotics but early detection is key to prevent serious health complications and to avoid further spread of the infection.
Viral STIs can cause a range of symptoms and health effects and some of them are incurable, but treatment and management options are available.
It is important for individuals who are sexually active to get tested regularly.
