Mental health problems are one of the most common health issues that is underestimated, as many don’t seek advice because of its sensitive nature. Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health problems in Philippines.

“An estimated 12 billion workdays are lost every year due to depression and anxiety, costing the global economy nearly $1 trillion”, as per the World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization.

What is Mental Health Problem?

  • Also called mental health disorder.
  • It refers to a wide range of mental health conditions, that affect person’s mood, thinking and behavior.
  • Examples of mental disorders include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia. It includes also eating disorders and addiction.
  • Many people have mental health issues from time to time.

Causes of increased Mental Health Problems in PH

Depression rate in the Philippines, during the Covid-19 pandemic, has increased to one out of four people, (about 25%), because of the isolation and loneliness being experienced during the lockdown enforced during the pandemic. Another factor is the transition from being isolated to face-to-face daily life activities, after being used to be alone during the Covid-19 period.

Mental health takes heavy toll on Filipino workers

Workers cannot perform their jobs as required due effect of metal health issues that may be manifested in the following signs and symptoms:

  • Feeling sad or down
  • Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate
  • Extreme mood changes
  • Withdrawal from friends and activities
  • Significant tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping
  • Inability to cope with daily work problems
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Sex drive changes
  • Excessive anger, hostility or violence
  • Suicidal thinking
