Sexually Transmitted Diseases – STDs

  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that are spread,  mainly, through sexual contact.
  • There are several types of Sexually Transmitted Diseases – STDs including:
    • Bacterial STDs: Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are all bacterial STIs.
    • Viral STDs: Herpes, HPV, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C are all viral STIs.
    • Parasitic STDs: Trichomoniasis is a parasitic STD.
    • Fungal STDs: Candidiasis (yeast infection) is a fungal STD.
    • Protozoal STDs: Amoebiasis and giardiasis are protozoan STDs.
  • Bacterial STIs can be easily treated with antibiotics but early detection is key to prevent serious health complications and to avoid further spread of the infection.
  • Viral STIs can cause a range of symptoms and health effects and some of them are incurable, but treatment and management options are available.
  • It is important for individuals who are sexually active to get tested regularly.
