Heart attack, can be spotted by a rapid low-cost blood test

Heart attack is an emergency medical condition. But there is a rapid blood test that can spot the risk of heart attack before having the attack. Also, the test can be used to monitor the treatment of people with chest pain. That test called troponin – which is released by damaged heart cells – in patients’ blood.
Heart attack is a medical emergency
A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when a part of the heart muscle doesn’t get enough blood. The more time that passes without treatment to restore blood flow, the greater the damage to the heart muscle. So , it is an emergency that requires fast medical response to protect the heart.
The most common cause for heart attack is coronary artery disease (CAD). There other reason that are less common. Those include several factors. One is a severe spasm, or sudden contraction, of a coronary artery. This can stop blood flow to the heart muscle.
Heart attack symptoms:
Symptoms include chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, pain in the jaw, neck, or arms, sweating, nausea, and dizziness. Read more about: Recognizing Heart Attack Symptoms Early
Rapid Blood Test to Predict Heart Attack
The test is called troponin test , as troponin is released into the patient’s blood by damaged heart cells. The higher the level of troponin in the blood, the more likely to have – a heart attack.
In some studies, the troponin test accurately predicted the risk of heart attack. This was observed in more than 6000 patients admitted to hospitals in Scotland. Source: Blood Test for Heart Attack: Detect When Heart Attacks Occur
Troponin Levels in the Blood
The research covered almost 23,000 people at 19 different hospitals across Europe, North America, and Australasia. Participants received the test after arriving with chest pain. There was a level of troponin in the blood. Below this level, patients are unlikely to get a heart attack. They are at very low risk of experiencing one in the next 30 days.
Troponin test is affordable , as it costs around 10 to 20 USD. Also the test result can be obtained in less that 30 minutes. So, it is very useful as a routine test for all patients. It is used for those presenting with chest pain to rule out serious conditions.
Other laboratory Tests for Heart Disease
Laboratory tests are used to detect the risk factors for heart diseases. These include detection of the fats, cholesterol and lipid components of blood including LDL, HDL, Triglycerides. Blood sugar and Glycosylated hemoglobin is measured for detection of diabetes.
- Total cholesterol in blood.
- Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (sometimes called “bad” cholesterol). Too much of it causes fat to build up in the arteries, which reduces blood flow. This can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (sometimes called “good” cholesterol). It helps carry away LDL cholesterol and clear your arteries.
- Triglycerides are a type of fat in blood. High levels of triglycerides are often associated with diabetes, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.
